Spring is in the air and Roomy is very excited to introduce our new Spring Collection! We are expecting our new pieces in the week or so and would like to share some of them with you now.

Back by popular demand, the Selenito Sofa is fresh and crisp in white leather. The Selenito line is available in different sizes and sectional configurations. Many custom fabric and leather to choose from.

Spring is all about fresh and vibrant colours. Check out our new Gia Chair featured in a lovely spring red. Available in different sizes and sectional configurations. Many custom fabrics and leathers to choose from.

Another Roomy favourite is the Monroe Sofa Collection. This spring we are bringing in a condo sofa (only 69” wide) with a double pull out bed. The Time Table is another great piece that Roomy has added to their Spring Collection. This table is multi functional. It is a coffee table, dining table, and desk all in one!

Roomy and CBC's The Steven and Chris Show

Roomy Home Interiors is being featured on CBC’s The Steven and Chris Show this month to share their expertise on condo living. For the past six years, Roomy has been a leader in their industry, always searching for and developing new and creative ways to maximize their clients’ homes. Roomy recently worked on a condo redesign that is a perfect example of modern sophistication, style, and of course, multi functionality.

Corinne LaFlamme, Senior Designer at Roomy recalls, “… [our] client presented us with a challenge for his 849 square foot one bedroom plus den condo: to turn his den into a space he will actually use and enjoy spending time in.”

Like many condos today, this project had an open concept living and dining room. This type of layout is fantastic for entertaining and can make your home feel larger, but it does present some interesting challenges too. Roomy wanted to ensure that the main living area felt open, but also that it had defined zones that could be intimate and cozy when being used.

The living area is defined by the placement of the media centre and the sectional placed opposite of it. A wool area rug adds another texture to the condo while further defining this zone. The custom chrome and glass coffee table and sofa table are “one of a kind” pieces from Roomy that add sparkle to the space. The custom media centre is a strong focal point that provides “… plenty of storage and display space for his collections.” Track lighting was installed in the living area for optimal lighting and to highlight key features.

The structural columns in this condo add architectural interest and help to define the dining area. The modern, dark wood dining table is surrounded by six high back dining chairs that have been custom upholstered. The five pendant chandelier over the table adds sparkle to the room and ties in the metal accents found throughout.

Roomy furnished her clients bedroom with a queen bed and a custom upholstered headboard. The headboard has tufting detail, adding depth to the piece and creating a plush and luxurious backdrop for this room. Custom, two drawer nightstands add storage to this room while the custom dresser creates a perfect vignette for a 42” plasma television. All of Roomy’s custom furniture pieces are eco friendly, made with Canadian woods and finished with water based stains.

LaFlamme recalls, “We wanted to spend some extra time and effort to not only meet [our clients] challenge, but to exceed it.” The den was transformed into a multi functional lounge and bar area. A sectional that can be divided up and used as separate chairs was specified in this room. A custom bar and display unit was designed to sit next to an electric fireplace, resulting in a den that is warm, inviting and completely custom.

Roomy is welcoming the new season with a fresh new look for our showroom. “Urban sophistication” is the guiding principle for our transformation this fall. Masculine paint colours are cleverly paired with more feminine touches to create a balance that everyone can enjoy. Venetian blue metallic paint adds a bold and unique accent to our grey and blue color scheme, while organic coy fish wallpaper adds elegance and modernity. High gloss white lacquers and chrome accents help to lighten the color scheme and add that ever important sparkle to the space.

Fall Collection Preview

Roomy is very excited to introduce our new autumn collection, featuring modern Italian pieces, high in style and functionality. The Florence Table is a fresh take on a modern classic. The stylish pedestal table has been given a facelift with turned detail on the base while modern lacquer and wood finishes keep it looking modern.
Our staple Odis Table has also been given a new look. Introduced this year, the new chrome frame option has been paired with a frosted extra white glass top for a fresh and clean appearance.

Also new in tables, Roomy is featuring the Performance Console and the Option Console. Both of these multifunctional pieces are perfect for smaller homes, doubling as console tables, work surfaces, and dining tables. The Option table is shown here both closed and then open.

The Alchemia Chair is Roomy’s take on the Ghost Chair, available in clear acrylic as well as nine different transparent and opaque colours. The Alchemia’s unique back sets it apart from other dining chairs as a true conversation piece. It is shown here in Red!

In addition, Roomy will be welcoming some new and interesting media units. The Modus Media Unit, available in dark wood as well as a contemporary white lacquer finish, is a sleek, low profile piece which compliments many different design styles. Custom Furntiure Highlights

In this clients home we were challenged to create furniture which provided ample storage and worked around the odd angles of the home all the while still retaining a sense of simple elegance. We captured the space available in the entrance and filled it with a small desk/console and upholstered storage bench. A custom buffet has been built into an odd corner of the dining room to soften the odd angles. Each bedroom has custom furniture and storage is integrated below both the children's bed by providing deep drawers. Desks and book shelves were designed to take advantage of stunning views of the city. Depth and texture were introduced into all of these rooms through the selection of fabrics, wood stains, glass and lighting.

Our furniture was recently featured on City Line!
The episode focused on multifunctional furniture for condominium living. Because we have such a selection of pieces which meet this description, we were asked to contribute 3 of our popular custom pieces.

The YC table, created by Joanna Kakkavas, is made of walnut and is great for clients who are looking for a side table that can also provide storage.

The Phoenix table and bench, created by Corinne La Flamme, is a console table which expands to become a dining table or desk. The bench pulls out to create seating for the table and features a drawer for extra storage!

All of our custom pieces can be modified to suit your living space. You may choose the type of wood, the finish and even the dimensions which will work best for you. We even welcome new ideas to create furniture styles that we haven't yet explored.

Design Green - Event Overview

The Design Green - Call to Action event was a great success! Gill deacon was the panel moderator and was very insightful with her questions during the question and answer period. On the panel was industrial designer Jonathan Loudon, graphic designer Bernard Hellen, architect Janna Levitt textile consultant Ellen Karp and interior designer Sandra Lester. Each industry specialist had their own perception on how we can all as consumers make "greener" choices. The Eco Suite was open for viewing and provided plenty of information about all of the innovative ways we can create environmentally conscious living environments.

Storage solutions are in essential part of planning condominium spaces.

There are many clever ways to find the hidden potential in our furniture pieces.
At our store, we carry many items from Canadian and Italian manufacturers that do just this. We also create many of our own pieces which are built locally. We encourage clients to come with their ideas so that we can create pieces suited just for them! In our studio, we will creat the working drawings for these pieces and then send them to our woodworkers for production. It's that easy!

Inspired by Small Spaces

The Merchandise building is a loft conversion
of a historic warehouse once owned
by Simpsons department store and later
Sears Canada. Constructed between
1910 - 1949 it is a classic example of
industrial architecture and is one of
Toronto’s largest condominium projects.
Living in one suite within this conversion,
our client’s expressed specific concerns.
Having a completely open concept living
and sleeping area, they hoped to create
partitions between rooms without
constructing actual walls. Inspired by their
Japanese heritage, our solution was to
build light Sohji screen doors made of
wood and glass. These doors provided
the visual and auditory privacy they
required.
Another dilemma was the lack of storage
in the unit. For this an integrated headboard,
shelving and closet units were
designed for the bedroom. Within this
piece we were also able to house
recessed halogen lighting thus eliminating
the need for night table lamps.
Condos within retrofit buildings are great!
They often showcase original architectural
elements and add to the visual
landscape of our city however they also
present unique design dilemmas. Our
designers are trained to help you
overcome your dilemmas and create a
harmonious living environment.

Eco Friendly Culture on King St East

Joanna Kakkavas, principal of Roomy Home, has always believed in supporting local artists and manufacturers. “When bying locally, we are not only supporting the local economy but also reducing transportation emissions produced during shipping. This begins with where the materials are sourced, such as wood for the frames and fabrics for the upholstery and then moves on to where the manufacturers are located.”

Recognizing the evolution in social awareness concerning “Eco Living” Roomy Home initiated their first green furniture collection in 2007 at the Toronto Interior Design Show.
Ms Kakkavas, together with Corinne La Flamme, senior designer for Roomy, launched
The Living Breathing City, which sought to touch its guests on a variety of levels. The furniture was all made from renewable and recycled resources. The materials used were bamboo, natural latex foam, natural fibres and recycled polyesters. Even the flooring reflected the theme as it was made of recycled rubber from car tires.
The show was a success and Roomy was then approached by one of Toronto’s top developers, Tridel to contribute custom furniture pieces to their new project, The Eco Suite.

This year, the duo were responsible for the re-design of the Sustainable Condo.
“Our role here was to determine how to make the existing exhibit more functional and stylish without loosing focus on it’s intent, to show condo dwellers how to use sustainable materials in their homes while integrating space saving solutions.” says La Flamme.
They did just that. A new bedroom was designed integrating a queen storage bed and luxurious upholstered headboard. A new media unit and desk were built around a state of the art flip screen T.V. The woods used were both local and low VOC emitting while the fabrics were natural and organic. They brought the functionality which they are so well known for and combined it with eco friendly materials.

Both Kakkavas and La Flamme agree that these projects are just the tip of the iceburg.
They both feel that while people have always come into their retail location looking for well constructed furniture, more and more are asking specifically for Canadian Made pieces. Many more are now also asking specifically about the materials used and how they can make their pieces even “greener”. It’s clear to see that Roomy Home Interiors would like to help their clients lessen their carbon footprint by simplifying the process of purchasing products that are both stylish and less harmful to the environment.
